Until Macallan joined the Highland distillers group, that company’s
principal bottled Speyside malt was Tamdhu. Both of these malts, along
with Glenrothes, are important Speyside elements in a proposed Vintage
Malt whisky from The Famous Grouse (and, of course, blends under that
name). Since 1997-98, Tamdhu has also played an important role in the
Dunhill blends.
It is to be hoped that Tamdhu, a mild, urbane whisky, leaning towards
sweetness, is not in future overlooked as a single malt. The distillery
is in the heart of Speyside, between Knockando and Cardhu. It was founded
in 1896, and largely rebuilt in the 1970s. Water comes from the Tamdhu
burn, which flows through woodland into the Spey.
Tamdhu has a sizable and impressive Saladin maltings, providing for all
its own needs and those of several other whisky makers. A modest reminder
of this is the stylized ear of barley that appears on the label of the
principal version of Tamdhu. The distillery is impeccably well kept, and
has its own touches of tradition, notably its enthusiasm for wooden
fermenting vessels.
HOUSE STYLE
Mild, urbane. Sometimes toffee-nosed. Versatile.
