STRATHISLA DISTILLERY

The oldest distillery in the north of Scotland.  In the 13th century, Dominican monks used a spring nearby to provide water for brewing beer.  The same water, with a touch of calcium hardness and scarcely any peat character, has been used in the distillation of whisky since at least 1786.  Strathisla, which has also at times been known as Milltown, began its life as a farm distillery.  It started to take its present shape from the 1820s onwards, especially after a fire in 1876.  In 1950 it was acquired by Chivas/Seagram.  As a significant contributor to Chivas Regal, it is now the showpiece distillery for that blend.

Lightly peated malt is used, as well as wooden wash-backs and small stills.  Although wooden wash-backs are by no means unusual, Strathisla believes that fermentation characteristics play a very important part in the character of its dry, fruity, oaky malt whisky.  The only official bottling is the 12-year-old, but a range of ages is bottled under the distillery’s name by Gordon & MacPhail.
