The Western Highlands’ capital, Oban, has a whisky label printed with the
town’s history: settled by Mesolithic cave-dwellers before 5,000 BC, later
by Celts, Picts, and Vikings. It was a fishing village, and in the era of
railways and steamships became a gateway to the islands of the west, which
it still is. Travelers following the muses of Mendelssohn, Turner, Keats,
or Wordsworth to Mull or Iona, or Fingal’s Cave, return to see a
harbourfront centered on the distillery – backed by mossy, peaty hills
whence its water flows.
The whisky already had a following as a single malt when it was presented
as a salty-peaty 12-year-old in a Victorian-looking, beveled “perfume”
bottle. That has long been discontinued, and is hard to find. Its firm,
dry peatiness perhaps associated it with a vestigial style in the few
distilleries on the mainland of the Western Highland. Oban has become
much more widely appreciated as one of the Classic Malts range. In this
version, mellowed by even two more years in the wood, and gentler in its
peatiness, the salty coastal character is less masked. In 1997, a version
finished in Montilla fino was added.
HOUSE STYLE
Medium, with fresh peat and a whiff of the sea. With seafood or game, or
after dinner.
