Reputedly, Queen Victoria enjoyed this famously rich malt and used it to
lace her claret, thereby ruining two of the world’s greatest drinks. The
distillery is at the foot of the mountain of Lochnagar, near the River
Dee, not far from Aberdeen.
A
man believed originally to have been an illicit whisky maker established
the first legal Lochnagar distillery in 1826, and the present premises
were built in 1845. Three years later, the Royal family acquired nearby
Balmoral as their Scottish country home. The then owner, John Begg, wrote
a note to inviting Prince Albert to visit. The Prince and Queen Victoria
arrived the very next day. Soon afterwards, the distillery began to
supply the Queen, and became known as Royal Lochnagar. Over the years,
the distillery has been rebuilt three times, most recently in 1967. Its
whisky has been an important component in the blend VAT 69.
The water flows from the small peak of Lochnagar over peat and heather.
The 12-year-old is aged in second-fill casks, while the Selected Reserve
has 50 per cent sherry.
HOUSE STYLE
Malty, fruity, spice, cake-like. After dinner.
