It is hoped that the new millennium will see a new still-house in the
former maltings at historic Littlemill. The intention is that it should
be a very small working distillery, with a bottling hall, as well as being
a tourist attraction and museum. These plans have long been nurtured by
current proprietors Loch Lomond. (They own both the Loch Lomond and
Littlemill distilleries, as well as Glen Scotia.) The previous
proprietors went into receivership in 1994. An eight-year-old still being
bottled was made in stills dismantled in the 1990s. Until the 1930s,
Littlemill followed the Lowland practice of triple distillation. The
surviving buildings date from at least 1817, but appear to be older.
Littlemill was long believed to date from 1772, but more recent evidence
suggests that it was already distilling in 1750. It is thus one of the
several claimants, each with a slightly different justification, to being
the oldest distillery in Scotland.
HOUSE STYLE
Marshmallow-soft. A restorative, or perhaps with dessert.
