The name, pronounced KNOCK-AN-DO (or ‘du’) sounds allusively comical to
English speakers, but the whisky is a single of some elegance. Knockando
is the keynote among several malts that are especially influential in the
Justerini and Brooks J&B blends. The sophistication of Knockando’s malt
whisky seems to match that of the company. Giacomo Justerini was an
Italian, from Bologna. He emigrated to Britain in pursuit of an opera
singer, Margherita Bellion, in 1749. The romance does not seem to have
come to fruition, but Justerini meanwhile worked in Britain as a maker of
liqueurs. By 1779, he was already selling Scotch whisky. Brooks was a
later partner in the firm.
In the US, where some people believe the guarantee “12-year-old” essential
to identify a premium malt, this phrase is used, along with the year of
distillation, on the label of the principal version. In Britain, the malt
is marketed under its season of distillation, with the year of bottling
also on the label. The notion is that the malt is bottled when it is
mature, rather than at a specific age. In both cases, some of the whisky
in the bottle will be up to 15 years old. (In all whiskies, the age shown
on the label represents the youngest component, and most contain some
older distillates.) In this version, one vintage does not differ
dramatically from another, though there are very subtle differences. At
older ages, the whisky gains greatly in complexity and sherry character.
The water with which the whisky is made rises from granite and flows over
peat. The distillery’s name translates as “a little black hill”.
Knockando is hidden in a fold in the hills overlooking the river Spey at a
fine spot for salmon fishing. The distillery was established in 1898.
