Islay |
The
malts of Islay (pronounced "eye-luh"), a remote island off the west
coast of Scotland, are certainly the most pungent, powerful and
idiosyncratic of all malt whiskies.
They are
cherished amongst blenders and as such, a small proportion of Islay malt
will find its way into almost every blend that appears on the market. It
is their intensity of flavour and their robust peaty, seaweedy profile
that provides so many whiskies with the richness and unique character that
seperates Scotch from whiskies produced anywhere else in the world. Some
of Islay’s greatest exponents include Ardbeg,
Lagavulin, Bowmore and last but not least, Laphroaig – the most famous of
all the Islay malts. And of the many Single Malts and other fine aged
whiskies which comprise Islay Mist, it is Laphroaig that makes the most
distinctive contribution to this characterful blend.
HOUSE STYLE
Bright gold
colour with pale gold hue. There is some viscosity evident. The nose is at
once
Islay,
but moreso Laphroaig, revealing volatile odours of rich peat, iodine and
seaweed. The palate continues the aroma profile with a burst of peat bog
over a sweet malty background. Slightly oily texture. Aftertaste of
ethanol, peat and smokey malt. A simpler, softer Islay style, but still
with plenty of character and weight and the perfect accompaniment to
Japanese food.
