The
most aristocratic of wine and spirit merchants, Berry Brothers and Rudd
have over the past five to ten years showcased Glenrothes as their house
malt. Once, many respected wine merchants in England as well as Scotland
offered their own bottlings of single malts, as well as combining them in
house blends. Glenrothes’ quietly noble whisky has traditionally been a
component of Berry’s internationally known Cutty Sark, and a favorite
among blenders. The distillery, established in 1878, is one of five in
the small town of Rothes.
The
firm of Berry’s began in the 1690s, selling tea, groceries, and wine.
Cutty Sark was launched in the 1920s. It is named after the famously fast
tea clipper Cutty Sark, which was built in Scotland. Both Glenrothes and
Cutty Sark are sold not only in Berry’s 1730s premises in stately St.
James’s, London, but also in the company’s stores at London’s Heathrow
airport.
