According to the newish
sub-title on its label, “The Edinburgh Malt”. About 15 miles from the
capital, and near the village of Pencaitland, this is an eminently
visitable distillery. It traces its origins to at least the 1820s
and1830s, to a farm in barley-growing country in the glen of the Kinchie.
This burn flows from the green Lammermuir Hills, which provide medium-hard
water, and flows toward the small coastal resorts where the Firth of Forth
meets the sea. In the 1940s and 1950s, the distillery manager bred
prize-winning cattle, feeding them on the spent grain. Delphiniums and
roses grow outside the manager’s office, and the distillery has its own
bowling green. The buildings resemble those of a Borders woolen mill.
For much of the distillery’s history, the whisky was largely used in the
Haig blends. In 1988-89, it was launched as a single in the Classic Malts
range, and in 1997 an Amontillado finish was added. In the same year a
new visitor center was opened. Among the exhibits is a 75-year-old model
of the distillery which was built by the firm of Basset-Lowke, better
known for their miniature steam engines.
HOUSE STYLE
Flowery start, complex flavors, and a dry finish. A restorative,
especially after a walk in the hills.
