GLENGOYNE DISTILLERY
Increasing emphasis is being placed on the use exclusively of unpeated malt in this clean, nutty whisky, distilled just across the Highland line. It now describes itself as a Southern Highland malt. An outstanding Millennium edition is the latest among many special bottlings. These have included a deliciously creamy version made entirely with the Golden Promise variety of barley, from one farm in Northumberland; winter distillations benefiting from very cold weather; and even some made on December 25 in the days (until1972_ when the Scots worked at Christmas. Glengoyne is also unusual in its favored style of sherry wood, palo cortado, though very limited bottlings have also been done from other styles, including fino and old amontillado. Coopers and bodegas in Jerez are commissioned to produce casks for the distillery. Glengoyne is very attractive and eminently visitable, being only a dozen miles from the center of Glasgow. The distillery and the hamlet of Dumgoyne take their name from the older Guin, a small river that eventually flows into Loch Lomond. Sheep graze on the hills behind, and burns flow into a well-tended glen, forming a waterfall. Glengoyne is said to have been established in 1833, and has been owned by Lang’s since the 1870s. Since the mid 1960s, Lang’s has been a subsidiary of Robertson and Baxter, owned by a holding company called The Edrington Group. The whisky contributes to the Lang’s blends, Cutty Sark, and The Famous Grouse.
