GLEN GARIOCH DISTILLERY
The renewal of any vintage distillery is good news, but Glengarioch (one word for the premises; two for the whisky) has a special place for lovers of smoky Highlanders. The distillery, which traces its history to 1797, has its own floor maltings. Down one side of the maltings and distillery, a farm lane enters the Garioch Valley, rich in malting barley. The building’s stonework, decorated with a clock that might grace a municipal building, faces on to the small town of Old Meldrum, on the road from Aberdeen to Banff. In the days when the whisky was made primarily as a contributor to VAT 69, a peaty malt was not used, but that changed in 1970, when the distillery was acquired by its present owners. Their maltster, trained on Islay, was relatively heavy-handed with the peat. The result was a whisky with the “old-fashioned”, smoky flavor that the Highland/Speyside region had largely forgotten. In 1995, quirky little Glengarioch temporarily lost the battle for attention with the higher-profile distilleries in the same company, and ceased production. Two years later, more enlightened sensibilities prevailed. The distillery (pronounced Glengeery) was refurbished and reopened, with a similar treatment planned for the maltings. Will the malt, and whisky, be as peaty in future? That currently being made for blending is more conventional in style. One good suggestion is that a well-peated edition will be made at least once a year.
