GLEN MORAY DISTILLERY

Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc finishing (for 6 to 12 months) gives a new flourish, seemingly intended to be feminine, to a range of three Glen Moray malts launched in 1999.  The wine character is most obvious in the youngest of the three.  The use of whites is an innovation in the industry.  Glen Moray shares owners with the more northerly Glenmorangie distillery, which pioneered the notion of “wine” finishes but with reds, port, and Madeira.  The two distilleries’ similar names pre-date their common ownership.  It is a second coincidence that both were formerly breweries.  Glen Moray was converted into d distillery in 1897, acquired by its present owners in the 1920s, and extended in 1958.  Its whiskies are admired, but have never enjoyed great glamour.  Now they sport a change of orientation: skirts instead of kilts; the distillery previously favored gift tins with the liveries of Highland regiments.
