The
smallest distillery in Scotland, clearly showing its origins as a farm,
Edradour likes to trace its history back to the beginning of legal whisky
production in the
Highlands in 1825, although the present distillery is believed to have been
founded in 1837. The distillery, at the hamlet of Balnauld, above the
town of Pitlochry,
is secreted by the hills. It is reputed to have enjoyed much American
custom during Prohibition. One story maintains that it was later
indirectly owned for a period by the Mafia.
Its
water rises through granite and peat. Edradour uses local barley and its
stills are the smallest in Scotland, which must contribute to the
distinctive richness of the malt. Stills much smaller would not be
permitted by Customs and Excise, for fear that they could be hidden from
the law. At one stage, Edradour’s whisky was quite evident in a creamy,
spicy, vatted malt called Glenforres. In the late 1980s, a ten-year-old
Edradour was introduced as a single malt scotch.
HOUSE STYLE
Minty, creamy. After dinner.
