Next door to Glenfiddich.
The same company founded both distilleries, in 1886 and 1892 respectively,
added Kininvie almost a century later, in 1990, and remains a family
firm. The Balvenie whiskies are sweeter and richer: classic examples of
the Speyside heather-honey style. The distillery uses barley from the
family farm, has its own floor maltings, and its stills have a
distinctive, bulbous shape.
In the 1980s, two
versions under the name Balvenie Classic were produced. One, without an
age statement, was finished in sherry wood (before this technique became
fashionable). There was also an 18-year-old Classic without the sherry
finish. In 1993 the company dispensed with its flask-shaped bottle in
favor of a more robust design, and introduced the versions shown below and
on the facing page. In 1997 the Port Wood was added.
HOUSE STYLE
The most honeyish of malts, with a distinctively orangey note. After
dinner. Ages well.
